You will ensure the safe operation of ships and compliance of the statutory requirements of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. Assists in the implementation and upkeep of the Safety Management System of the company, analyses risk and ensures compliance to the organisation’s risk management framework. Provides guidance to the Master on board for navigational and operational matters and also conducts incident investigation on board the ship, while promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities includes:

Compliance with International and Domestic regulatory requirements and legislations

  • Ensure vessels maintain flag (deep understanding of Flag state requirements preferred)
  • Ensure timely execution of surveys and certificates renewals and placement of documents on board ships
  • Ensure vessels comply with International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Port State rules and regulations
  • Ensure compliance to International Safety Management (ISM) code, International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and International Organisation of Standards (ISO) compliance
  • Study of international maritime conventions, domestic and foreign laws and regulations and measures to comply with them

Supervise and Management of ships to ensure seaworthiness

  • Maintain Safety Management System (SMS) updates to ensure quality, accuracy, and efficient procedures
  • Supervise and management of “Ship Security”
  • Surveillance & monitoring of safe operation and cargo handling

Supervise and Management of Marine Casualty

  • Initial response action in an emergency situation and cope with marine casualties
  • Verification and instruction concerning measures to prevent accidents
  • Handling of matters of accidents/near-miss and analysis of causes to prevent against future marine casualties

Marine Practices

  • Management of marine techniques, navigational practices and instructions to seafarers
  • Conduct briefings to seafarers on prevention of Marine and Air Pollution
  • To instruct vessels regarding implementation of instructions regarding safe and efficient operation
  • Implement and ensure compliance of special requirements of cargo handling.
  • Monitoring and maintaining records regarding vessel performance to charter party requirements
  • Liaise with charterer on Cargo and Bunker related matters for efficient operation of the vessel. Providing information to Charterer as required

Regular on board internal audits

  • Safety, Security, MLC & ISO auditing for managed ships on a regular basis
  • Ensuring / monitoring compliance with the ISM / ISPS Code
  • To conduct internal audits, pre-vetting inspection preparation and safety inspections as per the Company audit/ inspection plan

Other duties related to

  • Safety and Health
  • Duties related to the insurance matters, i.e. liaison with P&I club, COFR & CLC Certificates
  • Training of seafarers in terms of Behaviour Based Safety & Routine Task Risk Assessment


  • Possess Master Certificate of Competency (Class 1)
  • Recent experience of ship inspections, audits and crew trainings on merchant vessels – willing to travel at short notice.
  • Deep understanding of vessel operations, various ship board audits and inspections
  • Understand and appreciate the commercial implications of vessel operations
  • Detailed and analytical, and have a safety, cost and quality conscious mindset
  • Open to change management and adaptable to a fast and versatile environment
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in English, both written and verbal, in order to perform in an international environment
